Novembering

Full fall weekend. How was yours? Here’s what I learned:

1. Raking leaves gives me hives in a major way.

2. My daughter’s adorable-ness makes the hives I got from raking with her slightly more bearable.

3. I always see something new every time I go on a walk.

4. Did you know your city has a “Walk Score?” and you can have your very own address rated. My neighborhood rates at a 45 (100 best) – not too shabby but surprisingly low for the amount of useful walking I can do around here.

5. Home made biscuits are good. G—-ooood.  I ordered a copy of Home Made by Yvette van Boven and the thing weighs a ton but has wonderful recipes and other do-it-yourself ideas for home cooking. My thumbs are totally up for the amount of recipes and pretty pictures. More testing must be done!

6. You might see a bright green Statue of Liberty head there mid-collage above. It’s a student artwork that is there to remind me how much great stuff my students are capable of.

7. Okay, it’s also there because I have officially decided to make the effort to go to the 2012 National Art Educator’s Convention in NYC. Any art teachers out there gonna go?  Let me know ;-)

Melancholy

October 6, 2011

Lauren Ingraham Alexander

You thought I was kidding about the nature photos? Ha! I was attracted to the blue green leaves and the shades of hot pinks. Before I go spreading my seasonal melancholy of  “I don’t have time for this…that…whatever)…..

Good news – my little Buffalo Boo (my little white dog) is on the mend and CONE FREE! Weeeeee – she’s like a little baby puppy again filled with happiness and spunk. Except we still can’t let her do anything exciting because her knee is still all broken and oozy.

Here’s a bit of Lauren Alexander trivia….did you know I have another dog? Her name is Jovie. And she’s not mine. Well, she wasn’t supposed to be. But after a year she’s kind of grown on me.

Here’s “the other dog”:

Happy Thursday, folks! The weekend is right round the corner…. if you go shopping, remember:

Chips and Cookies and other Soul Soothers

Labor Day Weekend. A joy of three days off I have not appreciated near as much as now that I am a full time working stiff. But a dark cloud is looming. My little dog has a hurt knee that will require a 1300 dollar band aid. My car has a faulty gear shifter that will likely cost at least an arm if not a leg. So what do we do when we are a little anxious about the awful part of being a financially independent grown up? We eat, of course. Eat well.

While my little boo girl was getting her x rays on her knee I popped over to the farmers market and grabbed some “barbie-sized” orange tomatoes. They are like candy. I can put back a box of these faster than I can a box of junior mints. And you know how much I like junior mints. In the spirit of trying something new I also got some kale – a leafy green I have heard good things about. I heard you can steam it, soup it, salad it, but what I really got excited about was making baked kale chips with olive oil and salt – which were described as being as addictive as potato chips. Say no more…

After 15 minutes in a moderate oven these kinky leaves turn extremely crispy, flaky, and as gross as it sounds the only way I can describe what I shoved in my mouth by the handful is like what fish food texture is – only it didn’t taste like fish food smells. I’ve never eaten fish food. That I can recall. Regardless. Totally worth the 2 bucks I paid for gobs of kale. Yum. But what’s with all this vegetable goodness? Can I get a sweet thing in here? It’s Saturday after all…

After reading about Natasha’s Mulberry and Mott bakery for months now on this or that food blog I decided it was time to hop into our other car with no A/C in the 90 degree heat and have a little treat. I walked in, ordered an iced coffee (as if that’s what I came for -ha!) and asked for a suggestion about what flavor of French macaroon to try. We agreed strawberry would be the best choice since strawberries are going out of season soon. What I imagined a macaroon is like (a ball rolled in coconut in a can at my great-grandmother’s apartment) was nothing like the soft and sweet creamy fresh amazingness  I enjoyed two feet from the front door of the place.

It was a good day for new foods. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll become inspired to do some new paintings. Stay tuned.

Photographs from the Edge

The edge of reason that is. It’s the only way I can describe my emotional state after my first full week of teaching full time. My brain is having trouble completing its own thoughts. So feast your eyeballs on these photos and try to unscramble my ramblings.

Friday was national photography day and I wanted to post these pictures from my classroom yesterday. But big storms blew out our power for most of the day and sent me whirling back in time to a place where a newspaper was the only source of morning entertainment. Love those last minute routine switcheroos that keep you on your toes, don’t you?

So here we are Saturday morning. I’m exhausted. My throat is dry from talking in my teacher voice. I’m looking forward to soaking up a whole lot of nothing in particular this weekend. What will you do? Oh, and one more picture. This one is my favorite. Not just because it is an awesome picture. I peeled everyone of these suckers:

Crayon peeling. Yep. I’m pretty proud of that accomplishment. Now if you’ll excuse me I have some more coffee to drink and a hot date with my daughter to watch Project Runway.

Now that Work is over…Back to Work!

July 23, 2011

Summer work (the official kind with a real paycheck) is over for me. For the next two weeks I can be an independent artist/amateur foodie/domestic goddess – all of which reap different but worthy “paychecks”. Then back to the real grind when school starts back up. I don’t want to think about that…look at my pretty veggies. I grabbed a feast from the Merriam Farmer’s market this morning. I will have to use it up before I leave town for a couple nights on Monday. Any good tomato recipes out there? Eggplant? I also got something called “noodle beans” from the Thai farmers.

Also of note this weekend are these three paintings I am working on. I think they are almost done. They are in the stage of painting where they just have to set there for a while…let the flavors blend….tomorrow I’ll figure out if they have reached their full potential. Kind of hard to see…but basically I was working on a snail, a flower, and a tree branch. And of course adding all kinds of crazy colors, lines, and shapes.

What are you doing this weekend?

Gawking about Peanut Butter Cookies

May 16, 2011

Lauren Ingraham Alexander

Once again I found myself late one night browsing photos of gorgeous food on Food Gawker. What, you think I have something better to do with my time? Nope.

I came across a recipe for some peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies that looked marvelous. Here’s the deal. There are about 17.9 ba-gillian recipes for cookies on the internet. What kind of recipes catch my attention? Ones with beautiful pictures of course! But that’s not all. Read more
