I should have called this blog “Eat. Paint. Listen.” because along with eating and painting I spend a lot of my time listening to music. It’s more than a necessary part of my day. But then, if I named it “Eat. Paint. Listen.” it would hardly satisfy my self obsessive side. So what am I listening to now? Recently, I discovered this century’s greatest technological advancement: I downloaded music to my phone. Now when I go on my walks or wash dishes I enjoy a few friends in my earphones.
First, there’s this new Jason Isbell album called Here We Rest. It’s good. Jason
is the kind of singer that knows how to quietly cut a hole in your heart and fill it with all kinds of crazy stuff. It’s hard to know if you ought to laugh or cry. My favorites are Codeine, Daisy Mae, and Heart on a String. If you’re lucky Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will come to your town and rock your brains out. You might even get to buy some art from the (super adorable) guitarist, Browan Lollar. He’s very good too.
Then on a whim I put Justin Townes Earle’s Harlem River Blues on the cellular too. Justin is a different sort of fish than Jason – but similar, sort of. Justin’s record is good, I think, but it has this kind of nostalgic sound that might turn people off – like when you get your family’s portrait taken in one of those antique photo parlors at a tourist trap. That may sound mean, but it’s not meant to be. I love some of those songs like Rogers Park, One More Night in Brooklyn, and of course the creepy but cool sounding title track Harlem River Blues.
Finally, let’s give some love to my lady friend, Adele. From what I can tell,
everyone is all up in Adele’s business. I think real music critics consider her pure solid gold. I had heard these good things about her so I am giving her latestalbum, 21, a whirl. And I admit it, girlfriend can sing. And once I got past her terribly boring cover of a terribly boring “Lovesong” I am starting to come around on her. I love love LOVE I’ll Be Waiting, Someone Like You, and of course Rolling in the Deep.
There you have it. That’s what’s up in music world here in Lauren Land. You’re welcome.

I can’t function without music. I kind of feel that life would be a million times better if there was background music everywhere. I am fortunate that every job I have had allows me to listen to music while I work. I am like you in the way that whenever I am cooking, doing dishes, cleaning, etc. I need some music to accompany my chores. Life would be so terrible without music. I am heading to itunes now to check out the first two CDs you listed. Thanks for the recommendations!
Yay! Life is terrible without music. I play it in class with kids…but we get a little more high-brow with the classical stuff and/or Elvis.
I’m glad to see someone else is blossoming late! Meaning, I just recently started using my phone for entertainment purposes, and almost feel like a traitor. I was one of those who poked fun at smartphone, app-obsessed people. *blush*
The most awesome thing I’ve discovered so far is Pandora Radio. Everyone else is rolling their eyes – been there, done that – but I hadn’t tested it out until a couple months ago.
I love that you can customize your music preferences, and it chooses all sorts of artists who were previously unknown to me, but whose styles I love! I downloaded some albums from iTunes after hearing them for the first time on Pandora.
I can access my personal stations on my phone from anywhere in town, at the park, in my studio, in the car (with a stereo adapter) – That was the best part! No more cheesy Top 40 radio for me.
Okay, sorry, just realized how spammy this sounds. They should give me brownies for the commercial plug, right??
I use Pandora too! It’s a great way to find new artists. Yes, they should give us brownies….
